Broncos

Upon the arrival of the two-minute warning at Mile High's icy Empower Field, the Broncos appeared to be another example of their remarkable perseverance.

Denver had once again avoided certain defeat after rallying from a 1-5 start to take a commanding lead in the AFC wild-card race with three games remaining. With a 16-point deficit going into the fourth quarter, the Broncos managed two successful two-point conversion attempts in addition to touchdown drives of 83 and 78 yards.

In the final moments of Christmas Eve, the Broncos then forced a three-and-out to give themselves a shot at an unexpected victory.

The Patriots recovered a fumbled kickoff return by Marvin Mims Jr. for a touchdown, giving the Broncos a meager 1.6 percent chance to score.

Personally, I thought I blew it," Mims remarked. "... in the end, it cost us." I realize that [I have to] improve. In the end, things do happen, but I just know that I need to improve."

Nevertheless, the Broncos had a 70.4 percent chance to win after the three-and-out and took over at their own 39-yard line.

They were on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest comebacks in franchise history in the fourth quarter.

QB Russell Wilson stated, "We felt that we were going to be able to win that game." "I assumed everyone was in conflict. It meant so much to all of us. It didn't work out for us.

The two late touchdown drives by the Broncos—which included a diving catch of 47 yards by Mims, a 3-yard catch by Lucas Krull, clutch completions to Jerry Jeudy, and a 21-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Johnson—were quickly rendered meaningless. Two more two-point conversions were called back, one from a fast toss to Javonte Williams and the other from a screen ball to Johnson.

Chad Ryland of the Patriots made up for a failed 47-yard field goal and extra point with the 56-yard kick, reducing the Broncos' postseason prospects to just 4%.

Head coach Sean Payton described the game as "really frustrating" and "a disappointing finish." I thought we had a lot of chances, particularly in the first half.

D.J. Jones recovered the fumble on the opening play from scrimmage after flattening Partiots quarterback Bailey Zappe. Denver grabbed possession at the 6-yard line, but Javonte Williams was tackled on a fourth-and-goal play from the 2-yard line, preventing the team from scoring.

Denver began a drive in New England territory, forced a punt, and then lost another opportunity to score. Russell Wilson hit Courtland Sutton with a deep pass down the left sideline on a third-and-six play from the New England 42-yard line, but Sutton was unable to hold onto the ball. After the game, Payton verified that Sutton had left the game due to a concussion, as per the league's protocol.
